Good day & yes. It’s business book review time.
Today’s review is ‘The Black Swan’ written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
I don’t really know where to start, as it was a tough read for me. It was recommended by an author from a previous book review.
The central idea of the book concerns our blindness to randomness & that most of us concentrate too much on the little things. Not the possible significant large random events.
Nassim has tagged these large random events as ‘Black Swans’ & he suggests we should all look into our own existence to count the significant events creating mass change. Which weren’t planned.
The impact can be huge & they’re nearly impossible to predict. Nassim calls on you to ignore the experts & stop trying to predict them. Just take advantage of the uncertainty they create.
I must admit. I got lost a few times. And I found it hard going.
But he’s a very cleaver guy & has researched his subject thoroughly. The detail is very interesting. Mind blowing in parts. Certainly, on a much more intellectual level than me.
If you’re into real detail. This is a book for you. But if you’re like me. You’ll find it a tough read.
Although. If you persevere. The knowledge gained is worth it. Be warned though. It’s well over 400 pages of very small text & will take many hours to get through.
Personally. I feel the book could have been condensed to at least half the size & still created the same impact or even a greater impact. If fact, it would probably appeal to much more people too.
‘The Black Swan gets an unsure thumb & ⭐⭐⭐.
