Thought for today…
The last time the Earth experienced a similar concentration of CO2 was over 3 million years ago. Back then, the temperature was 2°C warmer & sea levels were 10 meters higher than today.
What impact would this have on the world as we know it?
Yesterday the WMO (World Meteorological Organisation) sent out their latest update on greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere:
Saying. ‘Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have reached a new record high’.
‘This continuing trend means future generations will be confronted with increasingly severe impacts of climate change’.
‘Including rising temperatures, more extreme weather, water stress, sea level rise and disruption to marine and land eco-systems’.
WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said. “There is no sign of a slowdown in greenhouse gases concentration despite all the commitments under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change”.
“We need to translate the commitments into action and increase the level of ambition for the sake of the future welfare of mankind.”
It seems. These increases in greenhouse gases are being caused by 3 main factors. Burning of fossil fuels (for transportation, industry & domestic use), agriculture (livestock manure) & deforestation.
Our team can’t really do a lot to decrease the burning of fossil fuels or manage the levels of livestock manure. But we can influence deforestation, in our own small way.
You see. When trees are killed, they release the carbon that is normally stored for photosynthesis. This process releases nearly a billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere per year.
And according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ‘Replanting trees helps to reduce the build-up of CO2 in the atmosphere, as growing trees sequester CO2 through photosynthesis’.
Out of the 3 main factors. The one we can do something quickly about, is planting trees.
So, with our customers help, we’re on a mission to plant 1,000’s of trees. For every customer who signs up to 1 of our print technology solutions, we’ll plant them their very own tree.
But it’s important to point out. Planting trees alone is not enough. World Governments must unite & put unbreakable plans in place to reduce the use of fossil fuels & manage levels of manure.
