Blink and you’ll miss this week’s business book review…
Malcolm Gladwell is an English-born Canadian journalist, public speaker, and author of 5 best-selling books.
This book ‘Blink’ is one of them.
It’s a book about first impressions, those moments in life and business when we know something without knowing how. Gut instinct you might say.
Malcolm was inspired to write the book after he’d grown his hair long and his life changed.
He started to get speeding tickets, getting pulled out of airport security lines for questioning, and even accused of fitting the description of a sought rapist.
Only one thing had changed, his hair, and suddenly people started judging him on their first impression of how he looked.
Following this episode Malcolm’s research led him to uncover many more instances where first impressions are used rightly and wrongly.
From an art collector immediately feeling a statue is fake, with the museum already paying someone $10 million for it.
To a Japanese female trombonist being chosen to play in The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra on sound alone, when they thought Abbie was male.
Through to how little tweaks in product make-up & marketing can deceive you.
Not all it what it seems, and I suppose the message is, snap decisions can go both ways, and sometimes it’s best to blink and take a minute if you can.
It’s a good read, full of interesting stories & it’ll make you question your decision making.
‘Blink’ gets a 👍 & ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
