Good day. Tom Fitzsimons started drinking at 13 & alcohol was an addiction before he hit 20. Eventually downing 20 pints & 1/2 a bottle of whisky every day.
I first met Tom a few years ago. He gave a group of us a talk about the challenges in his life. How running became his saviour. And how some of the lessons can relate to business.
His book. ‘It’s Not About the Beard’. Is a testament to his new-found inner strength, determination & pig-headed perseverance to get the job done.
Tom gives you an understanding of how & why he started drinking. The impact it had on his close family. The challenges he overcame to get sober & the solace he found through running.
The main bulk of the book is dedicated to his monumental challenge to run across America in 100 days. Averaging over 30 miles a day in his desperation to finish the 3,100-mile challenge on time.
Some would say. This isn’t a business book. I would strongly disagree…
Tom did the run to get the message across. Us humans are capable of the most extraordinary things. And no matter your addiction. You have the capability to beat whatever is facing you. To become the person you always wanted to be.
For me. Business can be a little additive too. And there are many obstacles & challenges you need to overcome before you become even remotely successful.
I’m not comparing building a business to any form of serious addiction. I’m saying. The traits of inner strength, pig headed perseverance & determination never to give up. Tom had to rely on. Are the very same traits that entrepreneurs need too. In order to build & grow a successful business.
Although Tom is not an experienced author. This is 1 of the best books I’ve read. It’s jammed packed full of learnings & keeps you captivated right until the very end. It gets a thumbs up & a 5-rating stars.
