Gooday. It’s our New Year special business book review…
As the year draws to a close & we welcome in 2020, we wanted to share something with you that is close to our hearts. The power of positive relationships.
We aspire to build positive relationships every day. For us, it’s not about catching people doing something wrong. It’s about catching them doing something right & giving praise.
Ken Blanchard has been talking about the power of positive relationships for years & with the help of his SeaWorld co-authors, he captures the subject perfectly in his book ‘Whale Done’.
Ken has a knack of turning mundane subjects into parable’s & story’s, which grip you, making it much more interesting & getting the key messages to stick in your mind.
‘Whale Done’ is no different. Telling the story of manager Wes, who was struggling to motivate his team. The old methods of catching people doing things wrong, simply wasn’t working anymore.
After visiting SeaWorld in San Diego & talking with the killer whale trainers. Wes takes his learnings of building trust, accentuating the positive & redirecting negative behaviour back, to try with his team.
Wes stopped his old confrontational behaviour & instead concentrated on building positive relationships with both his team & family. Resulting in amazing results.
It’s a simple message. But a message easily forgotten. Every leader, manager or aspiring manager should have a copy of ‘Whale Done’ on their bookshelf & refer to it every so often.
‘Whale Done’ gets a thumbs up & 4 stars.
