Nobody would ever in a million years call me a style icon…
So, why have I just spent the last week reading ‘House of Versace’ by Deborah Ball?
Initially it was to understand and learn how the Versace brand was built, nearly disappeared, and then rose again from the ashes.
What I didn’t expect was to be taken on a ride which includes genius, extravagance, murder, drugs, a fractured family, the near loss of a billion-dollar empire, and an amazing escape.
Gianni Versace (with the help of his siblings) had built a billion-dollar business, which had all the ingredients to become the greatest fashion brand the world had ever seen.
Unfortunately, Gianni’s untimely murder (the motive of which has never been clear) fractured the family and the unbelievable antics of Donatella Versace virtually broke the company.
This book is littered with stories of how the Versace family (mainly Donatella) wined, dined, and took drugs with the rich and famous in the flawed belief doing this was helping to build the brand.
Characters central to the story (aside of the Versace’s) are Elton John, Naomi Campbell, Madonna, Kate Moss, Rupert Everitt and even Princess Diana (before her unfortunate death).
As with all books I read, it’s about the business learnings, which there are loads. Aside of this, it’s simply a terrific book with an unbelievable story.
It’s a fantastic read for anyone interested in fashion, celebrities, intrigue, or business.
I can’t tell you much more than this as it will spoil it. Just get yourself a copy and enjoy the ride.
