A couple of years ago I was burnt out …
We were in the middle of a business transformation project, had just moved from four retail stores to a business unit, and were losing money.
It was a tough time and it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
It all came to a head one Christmas day.
Just before we were about to eat. I blanked out on the floor, had what looked like a seizure and fell silent. My family thought I was dead.
A minute later I came round gasping for air. With my remaining energy, I raised myself up and burst outside, sucking in as much winter air as my lungs allowed.
It left me feeling burnt out, exhausted and with a kind of mind fog, like I was constantly dreaming.
After months of tests, the diagnosis was chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a form of mental exhaustion (ME), brought on by the sheer pressure and workload.
It’s not something that leaves you, it’ll always be lurking in the background. The only thing you can do, is manage your workload effectively to lessen the pressure.
So, we juggled a few things around and brought in a general manager to operate our business, which is proving to be the best decision we ever made.
It’s relieved the pressure and allowed me to concentrate on strategy and direction. Together with the team, we got through those dark days and are working towards our vision.
