Have you heard of the invisible gorilla experiment?
2 bright researchers (Christopher Chabris & Daniel Simons) created it to prove we are missing a lot of what goes on around us, and that we have no idea we are missing so much.
They’ve been studying inattentional blindness for years, which is when we fail to notice something fully visible (though unexpected) because our attention is focused on other things.
They showed people a video & asked them to count how many times 3 basketball players (wearing white shirts) passed a ball.
30 seconds in, a gorilla sauntered into the scene, faced the camera, thumbed its chest for 9 seconds & walked away.
Over half the viewers didn’t see the gorilla!
It’s become one of the best-known experiments in psychology & has been used by preachers, teachers, corporate trainers & even people hunters.
This phenomenon highlights the limitations of our minds.
We tend to focus in on something that’s in front of us, but we can also miss things that are happening right under our noses if we’re not expecting them.
It’s an important thing for our team to understand and has sharpened our attention to detail, when providing clients with our ‘fit for purpose’ office technology solutions.
