Good day. Yes that’s right. It’s business book review time…
Today’s book was first published way back in 2003 and was way before it’s time.
To be fair it’s even more relevant in today’s full on digital world.
Purple Cow written by Seth Godin challenges the way that most companies market products, which to be honest is still pretty much the same today.
Build an ok product and then market it to the masses in the hope that it will gain traction.
Seth thinks you should spin this process on its head. Target a defined market. Find out exactly what they want. And build a purple cow for them.
A purple cow is a product which stands out as something different, solves a problem or improves a situation and is so good, it exceeds your target markets expectations.
Build a product like that and Seth believes you don’t have to spend loads of cash marketing to the masses. Instead target the innovators and the early adopters in your defined market.
And if you’ve done a great job building a purple cow. The innovators and early adopters will do most of the marketing for you. Enabling you to reach full defined target market for a fraction of the cost.
It’s a great little book, full of examples, stories and thought provoking ideas. It’s just what I needed to read this week and has given me some ideas for post lock down.
‘Purple Cow’ gets a thumbs up & 5 stars.
