Dyson. The story of an inventors life.
dyson

The James Dyson story is an amazing one…

Most of us know Dyson through his cyclonic bagless hoover invention, hand dryers, purifying room heaters and hair dryers & stylers.

But did you know he also invented the ball barrow and an electric SUV with a range of six hundred miles (even with the heaters or aircon on full blast).

His book released this year ‘Invention: A life’ is a fascinating read and gives you an insight into what makes his tick.

Many would assume Dyson came from a wealthy background, but this is far from the truth. His father died when he was eight, leaving his mother to bring up three children alone.

Initially Dyson thought he’d become on artist, but as time passed, he was drawn towards design and then manufacturing, learning from Jeremy Fry of Rotork.

Eventually Dyson ventured out on his own, first creating the ball barrow, before being stiffed by his so-called work colleagues, swearing it would never happen again.

Before inventing his famous cyclonic hoover, and I’m sure you’ve heard the story. It took Dyson 5,127 prototypes before he had a working model. And is proof you should never give up. Each failure being one step closer to success.

Overtime Dyson invented their own immensely powerful but miniature motors, which are now the focal point of any new Dyson invention, included the Electric SUV.

Unfortunately, after spending half a billion pounds and just before launch, Dyson pulled the plug on producing the electric SUV, as he believed not many people would pay the price.

Dyson also goes on to explain why he moved their head office to Singapore and manufacturing to numerous Asian countries, including Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Fundamentally, he felt the British government didn’t support his manufacturing company and made it exceedingly difficult for him to build new factories.

Plus, the education system had a severe lack of focus on producing skilled engineering personnel.

If you’re interested in business, whether you like Dyson products or not, I’d advise you to read this book, it’s jammed of full of learnings.

‘Invented: A Life’ gets a thumbs up and 5 stars.
