Gooday. Have you time for a business book review?
5 years ago we went through a very tough business transformation.
You see. Our industry was going through massive change & selling printer cartridges through retail stores was not where the market was heading.
The future was ‘fit for purpose’ printing solutions, available in affordable monthly subscriptions with no cost of entry. Providing certainty of cost & total peace of mind. No matter the organisation size.
This was a huge mindset change for our team. Transitioning from a reactional retail store product business to a proactive service & field-based print technology solution business.
Reading Patrick Lencioni’s book ‘The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team’ really helped both the team & I understand what was broken, how things could be fixed & who in the team had to change.
If was a tough time & I’ve not picked the book up for years. That was until this week. Something inside, told me enough time had passed & it was time to share the knowledge with others.
So here goes…
At its core ‘The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team’ is about making sure you have the right balance of personalities in your team for each given environment. Who’re all rowing in the same direction.
And it’s not just about having the right mix of people. It’s also making sure they’re all sitting in the right seats. Sometimes it can take a bit of swapping things around until you find the right formula.
If I remember, the saying goes. ‘Make sure the right people get on your bus & that they’re all sitting in the right seats, whilst facing in the same direction’.
Although important. This subject can get very deep & boring. But what I like about Patrick’s book. He’s turned it into a fun to read fable. Although not exactly true. It’s a very close account.
Now. It’s not going to be for everyone. Only those trying to build a new team or those who’ve inherited a dysfunctional team. Although. It will help with any level of team. Not just leadership.
Personally. How it helped shape our team, whilst we transformed. I’ve got to say it’s a great book.
‘5 Dysfunctions of a team’ gets a thumbs up & 5 stars.
