Gooday. Fancy listening to a business book review?
Ben Horowitz is a New York Times bestselling author. I reviewed his other book ‘The Hard Thing About Hard Things’ just a few weeks back & thought I’d give ‘What You do is Who You Are’ a go.
And it’s not disappointed me…
The book is about creating the right culture is your organisation. If fact. It’s more that that. It’s about why you should create it too.
And it’s not what you’d expect from a business book about culture.
Ben concentrates in the depths of history, giving you examples of past leaders, who’ve created followings and kept them loyal over long periods, through implementing the right culture.
It’s full of people you don’t expect to be profiled in a business book, which is why I found it extremely interesting, thought provoking and captivating.
People like Haiti’s Toussaint Louverture, who led the only successful slave revolt. The Samurai, who ruled Japan for 700 years. Genghis Khan, who built the worlds largest empire. Finishing with Shaka Senghor, who transformed prison culture & created the most formidable prison gang.
It’s clever and revealing how Ben connects these historical leadership cultures to modern day organisations, like Netflix, Uber, McDonalds and even Hilary Clinton.
Organisation culture really interests me and although difficult to achieve, I firmly believe, creating the right culture is fundamental to customer loyalty and long-term business success.
‘What You do is Who You Are’ gets a thumbs up & 5 stars.
