This week’s business book review is about a subject close to my heart…
‘Common Purpose’ written by Joel Kurtzman is about building teams who fit the organisations culture and are driven on by shared goals.
Look, it’s even signed by the author.
It’s not necessarily just about building winning business teams, it could be a football team, netball team or even a volunteer group, any scenario where it takes a group working together to get results.
Kurtzman attempts to answer the question on how a leader can get their organisation to achieve extraordinary results.
And the answer is, it’s not the leader themselves, but the team that they build.
I’m a great believer in spending quality time making sure you build teams with people who fit the organisations culture, and who will bond with colleagues but are also willing to challenge you.
The other important thing is building your teams with people who are better than you.
This might be a better salesperson, finance person or marketing executive. It’s important and will help you grow. But you’ll be surprised by how many people are scared to do this.
Kurztman says. “Common Purpose is that rare experience when a leader fuses a group, team or community into a creative, dynamic, brave, and nearly invincible we”.
“It happens the moment the organisation’s values, objectives and goals are absorbed by the whole team, who then work tirelessly towards achieving them”.
Yes, the book goes into much more detail and provides lots of examples where leaders have both succeeded and failed. But for me, these sentences some ‘Common Purpose’ up.
The learnings in this book are ageless, and I’d urge any leader or aspiring leader (no matter the industry or genre) to give this book a read.
‘Common Purpose’ gets a thumbs up and 5 stars.
