The Daily Mail says home workers are being ripped off with printer ink…
Because it’s vastly more expensive than Dom Perignon vintage champagne.
Straight up! It’s true. The article on page 53 of Saturday’s Daily Mail almost takes up the entire page.
They worked out (which the help of Which?) an Epson cartridge, cost a whopping £2.04 for 1 millilitre of ink, whilst the vintage champagne came in 85% cheaper, at just 30p.
I’m not sure what your printing would look like though, using Dom Perignon champagne.
Although, I could imagine your writing would be a bit wobbly after drinking a bottle or 2.
Seriously though. The high cost of original cartridges is a big issue for both home & business users.
HP’s business model is to sell their entry level printers cheap, planning to make large profits on the high cost of their original replacement cartridges.
And as the article details. To secure these high profits, they lock out other cartridge brands through the automatic security firmware updates they release.
The law states you have the right to choose what cartridge you put in your printer, without any recourse from the manufacturer, as you own the machine.
But this doesn’t stop the manufacturers from coming up with ever more ways to lock other cartridge brands out, which locks you in to buying their expensive printer cartridges.
HP are also trying to lock people in with their cartridge subscription service (Instant Ink), attracting customers with low prices for a handful of pages.
But don’t be fooled, once you’ve used up your initial allowance (which most families & businesses will do very quickly) the extra monthly costs soon ramp up.
Printer manufacturers have recently come up with a unique way to stop you having a choice.
Supplying printers, complete with full large ink tanks on the side. Charging you anything up to £300 for the pleasure, whilst getting you to pay upfront for the ink too.
To refill them you’ve got to buy & poor the ink in yourselves. Just watch you don’t spill any, as it’ll be messy, and we can speak through many years of experience working with ink.
Leading consumer group Which? argues. ‘The system is wrong & it should be up to customers to decide which printer cartridges they want to use.’
The Daily Mail went on to say. ‘In the US, a lawsuit resulted in some customers being reimbursed by HP for the costs of replacement cartridges & printers, following a class action.’
Which? and the article conclude by saying. ‘If you are in the market for a new printer, it might be best to avoid HP, if you don’t want to fork out for expensive cartridges.’
We’ll be honest with you. They’re some poor-quality alternative brand cartridges in the market. But, they’re also some high-quality ones too, which are at least as good as the originals.
