Seen as many of us can’t go to the pub, particularly those of use still stuck in tier 3…
I thought I’d bring the pub to you in a roundabout sort of way!
‘The Beermat Entrepreneur’ was originally written in 2002 but has was updated in 2005 after the dot.com era subsided.
The authors, Mike Southon and Chris West are both very experienced with start-ups, particularly Mike, who has worked with multiple start-ups, two of which went public.
Fundamentally the book is a blueprint of the things you need to concentrate on, and things you need to watch out for, whilst trying to scale a young business.
Starting way back in the planning stage, when you’re sat in the pub with a bunch of mates chatting through ideas, jotting them down on the back of beer mat.
Most of these beer mat ideas usually get forgotten after the 5th, 6th & 7th Pina Colada, but now and again one survives the hangover, to become a fledgling business.
This book is about taking that fledgling business and nurturing it with the right ingredients to grow it at scale, including the biggie, finding the right people to help you.
And finally deciding your exit plan:
- Do you keep growing to become a major player?
- Do you grow to it to the point where you get swallowed up by a major player?
- Or are you happy with you lot and just lurk in a niche?
- Or simply faff around, see your customers get poached and go bust?
It’s a good book, full of thoughtful ideas and proven advice from people who’ve worn the t-shirt.
