Do you organise your personal and business life through principles?
Ray Dalio certainly does…
For those of you who don’t know Ray Dalio, he’s the founder of Bridgewater Associates, one of the world’s most prestigious investment management companies.
Dalio started Bridgewater from his 2-bed apartment in 1975, and through developing a series of life and work principles, has grown it to 1,500 employees who manage $140 billion in assets.
He believes so deeply in using principles in this way Dalio has written a book called ‘Principles’, which is about how his own principles have helped shape his life and grow his company.
In the book Dalio discusses bits about his life, but not in an autobiographical way, more to do with setting the scene for the rest of the book, who’s main topic is principles.
It’s fair to say Dalio just loves business (like the rest of us love tennis, football or going to the gym).
From a young age he got involved with stocks and shares, not really knowing what he was doing, but learning as he went along.
Whilst building Bridgewater, Dalio and his team embraced technology, coupling it together with a deep understanding of past events and their impact on financial markets, with great success.
This is what has made them different to most other investment management companies, and along-side Dalio’s principles has made them one of the standout companies in their industry.
This is a must read for anyone interested in investment markets or in the process of growing a business, and wrestling with how to create the right team and install the right culture.
‘Principles’ gets a thumbs up and 5 stars.
