Good day, time for a business book review…
When most authors write a book about the traits of successful businesses, their research is focused on large public companies or those seeking to become large fast.
Interestingly there is a large group of smaller non-public companies growing quietly and gradually, and who are doing so in some amazing ways.
These companies don’t fit comfortably into any of the categories we normally put businesses in.
Some are tiny, others are quite large. Most are growing, often in unconventional ways, but several have chosen not to grow at all, with some even scaling back their operations.
‘Small Giants’ written and researched by Bo Burlingham is a book about these such companies.
Size and growth rate aside, these companies have certain other characteristics in common. The most telling ‘they are all utterly determined to be the best at what they do’.
Interestingly, they’ve all had the opportunity to raise capital to grow fast, do mergers & acquisitions and expand geographically. Yet they’ve chosen not to focus on fast growth or geographic expansion.
Instead pursuing other goals which are more important to them personally, such as investing heavily in their team’s development or supporting local community groups and charities.
Burlingham takes a subsection of 14 diverse companies from this group and gives us a detailed insight of their development over time, detailing what makes them different than the norm.
This book should be read by and inspire all those entrepreneurs and companies who want to grow by routing themselves in their local communities, and by doing good things in the world.
‘Small Giants’ gets a thumbs up and 5 stars.
