Good day, time for a business book review…
I’ve always admired what Jack Welch achieved at GE, so I jumped at the chance to read his best-selling book ‘Winning’.
It’s not dedicated to his time at GE, rather it’s dedicated to winning in business.
Yes, he talks about things that happened within GE, but he also brings in other business leaders from the likes of FIAT, 3M, The Home Depot and Yum! Brands.
The reason Welch wrote this book, was he thought people seemed to be embarrassed about growing a company to be successful and profitable.
Welch wants people to understand that good organisations with the right values, who win in their marketplace and become successful with fantastic profitability, support a huge eco-system.
They employee and treat well lots of people, who in-return pay their taxes and go spend their hard-earned cash in their local economies, which supports many other people’s lives too.
Welch is keen for business owners and leaders to stretch themselves and be winners in their market, who will in return employ lots of people, pay them well and look after their interests.
But at the same time, Welch also wants employees to understand to progress within an organisation, they must be committed and stretch themselves to be the best they can be.
The book lays out Welch’s 8-point strategy to create a business to win in its marketplace, whilst also admitting some of the areas where he could have done things better or differently.
Welch is very uncomplicated and straight forward, and I love his candid approach to doing business.
Anyone who wants to win in business, no matter your role or size of business should read this book.
‘Winning’ gets a thumbs up and 5 stars.
