Anyone who recruits people faces the same challenge…
We all wonder how to tell the outstanding prospects from the ones who look great on paper or say all the right things on interview but then fail on the job.
It’s been a real issue for us in our electric car charge point installation business, particularly finding electricians with the right mind set to work in a consumer retail business.
You see fitting charge points at people’s houses isn’t like working on a building site wiring unfinished unoccupied buildings. It just isn’t an electrical contractor’s business.
Which is why we must find electricians who are process and time driven, as in this retail world we must arrive on time and conduct installations in an organised and repeatable fashion, which allows us to provide an exceptional service to delight the customer.
Our challenge led us to this week’s business book review ‘The Rare Find’ written by New York Times bestselling author George Anders.
To research this book Anders scoured the globe for the world’s savviest talent spotters to see what they do differently to me or you.
His findings are eye opening, in that the talent spotters Anders studied don’t read a CV like most people, they look deep into the person to understand what lies beneath.
Anders calls it reading a CV upside down.
One talent spotter looked for sporting achievements to see if the people they interviewed were competitive and wanted to achieve remarkable things outside of work.
Another would look at why people with a good attitude had underperformed in the past, and whether a different training plan would turn them into over achievers.
An interesting section explains how a young Facebook found affordable talented programmers, which had slipped past the silicon valley giants of Google and Microsoft.
If you’re a bit frustrated with recruitment (even if you’re a recruiter yourself) have a read of this book, as it may just provide you with the wisdom you’re seeking.
‘The Rare Find’ gets a thumbs up and five stars.
