Lewis Pugh has been dubbed the human polar bear…
As well as a trained lawyer, Pugh is an endurance swimmer and climate change activist.
Although he doesn’t demonstrate on the streets like the other activists.
He uses his special power to demonstrate sea temperatures are rising because of climate change.
Pugh has a unique ability to raise his core body temperature by nearly 3 degrees.
Just before he jumps into freezing water his body automatically self-heats.
This unique skill has allowed Pugh to perform swims in places that would quickly kill other humans.
Pugh also uses the negativity of others to get his mindset ready to take on the challenge.
But his quest to be the first human to carry-out a long-distance swim in the North Pole was different.
After a 5-minute practice swim, Pugh couldn’t feel his left hand or fingers on his right for 4 months.
He was full of self-doubt. Until a friend challenged him to replace negative thoughts with positivity.
Giving him 3 ideas to get excited about:
- To focus on the people who have helped him with this project
- To remember his parents, who inspired him to care for the environment
- To think about the climate change legacy this swim will create.
Excited & bursting with pride Pugh plunged into the icy water.
19 minutes later he emerged victorious, sustaining no physical damage with his legacy created.
I’ve just spent 5 hours posting our home working leaflets through letterboxes. I know it’s not on the same level. Although, it still needed positive thinking to get the job done.
The power of positive thinking can make the impossible possible.
…even if you already have a super-power, like Lewis Pugh.
