Are you ready for a ‘good to great’ business book review?
‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins is a No. 1 bestseller and has now sold over 4 million copies.
It’s an amazing study on why some companies manage to go from a good company to a great company, by sustaining high growth over a long period.
Collins and his team put in place agreed measures. To be classed as a great company, a business had to out-perform the market by 3 times, sustained over a 15-year period.
The 11 companies chosen (on average) outperformed the market by 6.9 times, and if you’d invested £1,000 in them, you’d have made an eye watering ½ million pounds, by year 15.
The aim was to work out what good to great companies shared that distinguished them from a set of comparison companies.
What’s interesting, the good to great companies weren’t who you’d expect, like Coca Cola or Intel. They were less-known names like Walgreens, Circuit City and Fannie Mae.
Collins discovered several key concepts, which permitted these good to great companies to achieve such amazing results.
But what underpinned this and made the rest of the key concepts happen, is what they dubbed level 5 leadership, which was found in all the good to great companies.
According to Collins, ‘a level 5 leader builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will’.
It really is a fantastic book. Which must be read by all business leaders, aspiring business leaders, and anyone else interested in business growth research.
‘Good to Great’ gets a thumbs up & 5 stars.
