David Bowie was not just a musical genius & style icon. He had a brilliant mind & was a futurist too…
In 1999 during a BBC interview with Jeremy Paxman when discussing the internet Bowie said:
“I don’t think we’ve even seen the tip of the iceberg. I think the potential of what the internet is going to do is unimaginable. We’re actually on the cusp of something exhilarating and terrifying.”
“the actual context & state of content is going to be so different from anything we can envisage & the interplay between the user and the provider will be so in simpatico it’s going to crush our ideas of what mediums are all about.”
Then 4 years later in a New York Times interview he said:
”The absolute transformation of everything that we ever thought about music will take place within the next 10 years & nothing is going to stop it. I’m fully confident that copyright will no longer exist & authorship and intellectual property is in for such a bashing.”
”Music is going to become like running water or electricity. You’d better be prepared for doing lots of touring because that’s really the only unique situation going to be left. It’s terribly exciting”.
Bowie was super excited about the potential of the internet & entering a world where the monopolies no longer had the monopoly on how music is made, controlled & distributed.
Much of what Bowie said back then is true today. And not just for the music industry either…
